Mixing it up!

I always admire designers who have no fear when it comes to mixing lots of different patterns together in a room. This is one area I struggle with - I tend to avoid mixing too many different patterns together and end up playing it safe...which sometimes can be boring. What I've noticed in many of these photos is that pattern is used almost to the point of exaggeration - patterned carpet, walls, pillows, drapery, etc. However, I think this is why it works for most of these rooms - you kind of need to go a little over-the-top to really pull it off. Another tip is to mix patterns that are different scales; pairing a large print with a smaller one creates a sense of balance.

  1. All these mixed patterns work well because the colour scheme and style used are very consistent and classy. Beautiful shots!

  3. I get scared about mixing pattern, too, especially when they aren't the same colors. But the end result (of effective mixing)is one that looks warm, collected, and personal. Who wouldn't want that?

  4. I completely agree! I think the ability to layer pattern on pattern is the sign of a GREAT designer - I'm still trying to get there!
